Craftivated landscapes

Personal work, 2019

Craftivated

Craft- cultivated

For centuries, and especially the last, the planet has been dominated by the human species and been physically transformed by her actions to layers on layers of human-made strata. The fascination of human-made landscapes was the starting point for the project. Intimidated of what the creative creature called humanity has accomplished the “manufactured” appear extraterrestrial- it is more often than seldomly seen as a creation of “others”. Clearly, the big scales generate a distance between us and the landscapes and our own contribution to it.

The geological and ecological connection to piles of rubber tires, mountains of salt, and landfills are inadequate. Yet, in the context, the social aspect may be the most vital thus consumer behavior, mindsets, and other unsustainable lifestyles are the cause behind the transformation.  There is an urge to better understand these human-made landscapes as a complex matter.

With a need to make my own conscious layers, I responded to the unconsciousness of adding to the planetary layers in everyday life, with crafting. Shortly, weaving and doing embroidery, was the intermediator to reflect upon the split of mind, body, and the denied (or unknown) involvement in manufactured landscapes. The practice-based research resulted in an exhibition consisting of the interplay of a weave, a collage, and a zine, focusing on visualizing the complexity to the public.
